How to Wash and Store Soccer Jerseys ? Keep Your Collection Looking New - JerseyLab

Soccer jerseys are not like regular t-shirts. The lightweight polyester, heat-applied badges, and printed namesets all need different care. One trip through a hot dryer can ruin a name set that looked perfect when it arrived. Here is how to keep your jerseys looking new.

Washing: Cold Water, Inside Out, Gentle Cycle

Always turn your jersey inside out before washing. This protects the nameset, sponsor logos, and badge from rubbing against other clothes. Use cold water ? warm or hot water weakens the adhesive on heat-applied details. Set your machine to a gentle or delicate cycle. If your washer has a sportswear setting, use that.

Do not use fabric softener. It coats the polyester fibers and reduces breathability. A small amount of regular detergent is all you need. If the jersey is heavily stained, pre-treat the stain by hand rather than running a heavy wash cycle.

Drying: Air Dry Only

Never put a soccer jersey in the dryer. The heat will crack namesets, peel badges, and shrink the fabric. Hang it on a plastic hanger or lay it flat on a drying rack. Keep it out of direct sunlight for extended periods ? UV rays can fade colors over time. It will dry within a few hours because polyester does not hold much water.

Storing: Hangers, Not Folds

Hang your jerseys on plastic or padded hangers. Wire hangers can stretch the shoulders over time. Do not fold jerseys with printed namesets ? the crease can cause the print to crack along the fold line. If you must fold for travel or storage, place a sheet of tissue paper over the nameset first, then fold gently.

Dealing With Common Problems

Snagged thread: Do not pull it. Use a needle to gently push it back through to the inside of the jersey. Pulling will create a run in the fabric.

Peeling name set: If a corner of a letter starts lifting, you can sometimes fix it by placing parchment paper over it and pressing with an iron on low heat for 5-10 seconds. But be very careful ? too much heat makes it worse. When in doubt, leave it alone or take it to a shop that does jersey printing.

Smell that will not come out: Soak the jersey in a mixture of cold water and white vinegar (one part vinegar to four parts water) for 30 minutes before washing. This kills odor-causing bacteria without damaging the fabric.
